This is one of those instances where planning gave way a bit to luck. I had come to this area, for the first time, for a different reason. I knew it was a clear night, and it was late in the year, so a vertical Milky Way was set to appear just after sunset. The shape of the mountains and the horizontal lines leading to the horizon dictated my composition. What I hadn’t planned, though, was the Dark Horse nebula in the galactic core sitting perfectly atop the mountains.
Sitting there in the dark, I was approached by some vacationers, asking questions about night sky photography. We chatted for a little while, and I learned they traveled from the East Coast to do some camping. And what was so special to me was that they had never seen skies as dark as the ones we were sitting under. I remember the first time I was able to see the Milky Way with my eyes, and how amazed I was. And I felt incredibly lucky to share that moment with those random people.
